A man is currently in hospital with severe injuries after he fell in a department store in south-west London.  The accident happened at around 13:05, when the man, believed to be in his 20s, fell from an escalator. A fellow customer in the shop, a 28-year-old woman from Richmond, said she was walking away from the escalator when she heard a sudden thud. It is believed that the man fell from the third or fourth floor.

The customer said that the entire floor gasped when they saw what had happened. She said: “People coming off the escalator looked white as sheets”, adding that it was a very busy time of day when the accident happened.

“Our inquiries continue”

The London Ambulance Service was called straight to Peter Jones in Sloane Square, Chelsea. London air ambulance crews were also at the scene. He was treated for head and chest injuries and was then taken straight to St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington. Police recently commented on the case, describing his condition as “serious but stable”.

A spokesman from John Lewis said that all the staff members were greatly “shocked and upset” by what happened. The Peter Jones store was closed early following the accident, but will reopen again tomorrow.

A spokesman from Scotland Yard said: “Officers remain at the scene and our inquiries continue.”
