A handbook to help sufferers of mesothelioma has been launched on the 20th anniversary of June Hancock’s landmark case.
Ms Hancock was the first non-worker to successfully win a compensation claim for asbestos exposure that resulted in mesothelioma. Ms Hancock had been exposed to the deadly substance as a child living near to the JW Roberts asbestos factory in Leeds. She succeeded in securing a five-figure compensation payout a year before her death in 1997.
Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a highly aggressive form of lung cancer that is caused by breathing asbestos fibres into the lungs. Those most likely to develop mesothelioma are workers who were regularly exposed to the substance, such as factory workers, ship builders, and industrial workers.
However, many people were exposed to asbestos by living close to factories or by having asbestos fibres carried into the family home on a worker’s hair clothes and skin. June Hancock’s case paved the way for other non-workers to secure compensation for employers’ negligence.
Making a Claim for a Family Member
Tragically, due to the aggressive nature of mesothelioma, many sufferers die before they are able to make a claim against an employer. In these cases, it may be possible for surviving family members to make a claim on their relative’s behalf.
