Suspended GP returns to work

Despite numerous complaints from members of the public, a doctor that was suspended in 2012 has been allowed to return to work.  Dr Nagy Gabriel was suspended from the register after “patient safety concerns” were highlighted in an inquiry in March 2012.  Since the news was released, over 20 patients from the surgery in Kent have complained that he should not be permitted to return.

Having been out of work for two years, the General Medical Council has allowed him to return to work as a GP under the condition that he complies with 22 rules.  Dr Gabriel said that he would do all that he can to “improve his standard of practice”.

Development plan

Of these 22 rules – with some of them having to be met before he can return to work – most of them will be addressed through a 'development plan'.  This has been drawn up to ensure that he tackles key problems such as deficiencies in the assessment of patients’ conditions, providing and arranging treatment and his overall relationship with patients.  In addition to this, there will be close supervision of Dr Gabriel’s work at all times, and he will not be allowed to work as a locum or take on any out-of-hours work.

After an open meeting was held in May about Dr Gabriel’s return to work, the practice has received a total of 21 complaints from patients.  Many have threatened to leave the practice if he returns. One patient, Avril Chalk, said: “I don’t want the surgery to take him back … I think there would be a protest outside or something.”
